Update on BPI-2400: Where We Are and What Comes Next

As Chair of the BPI-2400 Work Group, I’d like to share a brief update on where the standard stands today and what’s ahead. 

pdfBPI-2400-S-2015 v.2 Standard Practice for Standardized Qualification of Whole-House Energy Savings Predictions by Calibration to Energy Use History provides a consistent, standardized way to qualify whole-home energy savings predictions through calibration of energy models to actual historical energy use—typically utility billing data. What makes BPI-2400 unique is that it helps answer a critical question: Do modeled savings reasonably reflect how a home will actually use energy? 

The standard plays an important role in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) HOMES Rebate Program. For the program’s modeled savings pathway, the IRA requires savings to be based on a whole-home energy model that has been calibrated in a manner consistent with BPI-2400. In order to support this requirement, a procedure has been developed for verifying software tools that are capable of BPI-2400 compliant calibration.  A current list of compliant modeling tools and DOE software verification procedures is available on the BPI website and continues to be updated. 

Standards like BPI-2400 are living documents, but revisions take time. Meanwhile, programs are launching and real-world use continues to raise questions that aren’t always explicitly addressed in the standard. That’s where technical interpretations come in. 

A technical interpretation is a formal clarification issued by the responsible committee to explain how the published standard should be understood or applied—without changing its requirements. These interpretations respond directly to questions from the field and are intended to support practical, real-world implementation.
