Healthy Home Evaluator

Overview

From identifying asthma triggers and risk of lead poisoning to testing for CO and other health hazards, tremendous opportunity exists to incorporate a healthy home analysis into home performance assessments.

The Healthy Home Evaluator (HHE) certification builds on the BPI Building Analyst (BA), Building Analyst Professional (BA-P), Multifamily Building Analyst, Energy Auditor (EA), or Quality Control Inspector (QCI) certifications. The HHE was developed in partnership with the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI). A Healthy Home Evaluator assesses home-based environmental health and safety hazards and provides a prioritized list of recommendations to address those hazards.

Steps to Get Healthy Home Evaluator (HHE) Certified

1. Prerequisites required: Hold, and maintain, an active BPI Building Analyst (BA), Building Analyst Professional (BA-P), Multifamily Building Analyst, Energy Auditor (EA), or Quality Control Inspector (QCI) certification. If you are not currently certified, you can take the online and field exams at any BPI Test Center.
2. Read the Certification Scheme Handbook for the Healthy Home Evaluator (HHE).
3. Training (optional): BPI does not require training and is not affiliated with any training centers. However, individuals that complete training typically perform better on BPI exams. Most BPI Test Centers offer training.
4. Schedule your exam with one of these BPI Test Centers offering the HHE exam or inquire with a BPI Test Center in your area.
5. Test Scores: After taking the exam at the BPI Test Center, you will see your exam score on the screen. You can also log in to your candidate account to see your score.
6. Certification: If successful, your certification will be available for print or download in your candidate account.

Exam Preparation

Candidates must pass an online exam to get Healthy Home Evaluator (HHE) certified. There is no field exam.

Online exam: 50 multiple-choice questions
Time limit: 1 ½ hours

Exam prices are set by BPI Test Centers. Please contact them for pricing.

Recertification

BPI Healthy Home Evaluators (HHEs) must recertify every three (3) years.

HHEs must maintain one of the five (5) prerequisite certifications (see Step 1 above).

Recertification is obtained by one of three methods:

1. Successfully challenge the HHE online exam prior to the certification expiration date
2. Accumulate a minimum of twenty-four (24) qualifying continuing education units (CEUs) over the three (3) years of certification and submit documentation of qualifying CEUs
3. For trainers or BPI Proctors, accumulate one hundred and fifty (150) hours of relevant Healthy Homes training over the three (3) years of certification and submit documentation of training

To bypass the exam using methods 2 or 3, you must fill out the Application for Certification Renewal, submit it with all supporting documents, and pay the renewal fee prior to the certification expiration date.
